Generally, a hot tub or whirlpool with hot water and jets with water inlet and outlet, which provide a therapeutic body massage, is known as a ‘jacuzzi’.
Have you ever wondered where the name ‘Jacuzzi’ comes from?
The term “Jacuzzi” comes from the commercial brand of whirlpool tubs but the frequent use of the word, ended up generalizing it.
Nowadays, this name is used to name any whirlpool bathtub.
How did the word jacuzzi and the invention itself come about?
In 1917 an American family business dedicated to the manufacture of hydraulic pumps invented it in response to a need. Specifically, it was the Jacuzzi brothers, sons of Italian immigrants, who created this invention that revolutionized the world of wellness.
In 1956, Candido Jacuzzi decided to create a device that could alleviate the pain of rheumatoid arthritis suffered by his son Ken. He came up with the idea of adding one of these pumps to the bathtub in his house to transform it into a therapeutic device.
To try to alleviate it, Candido adapted the mechanism of one of the company’s hydraulic pumps to produce a jet of air, thus reproducing the benefits of hydrotherapy.
Later, in 1968, Roy Jacuzzi, one of the nephews, saw the commercial potential of this invention and gave it its definitive form, with nozzles integrated into the bathtub. They decided to call it “Roman Bath”, in homage to the thermal culture of the ancient Romans.
Thanks to this product, the company started the journey of success and the name of the Jacuzzi brothers soon became known all over the world.
After 60 years, in 1970, they returned to Italy to the village of Valvasone, from which they had departed. A few steps away from their birthplace, they founded the first European plant for the production of whirlpool baths. Today it is the center of the global network that is Jacuzzi Brands Corporation.
